We love sweet potatoes. Well, Sweet Hubby and I love sweet potatoes. The Wonder Kids are developing a taste for them little by little. We were gifted 4 sweet potato slips last year that yielded several meals-worth of sweet potatoes. We decided to try growing them again this year. Before we could get around to ordering sweet potato slips, a gardener friend, Tiffany, had a post about growing sweet potato slips from store-bought, organic sweet potatoes. When I mentioned it to the Wonder Kids, they were excited. They love trying to grow just about anything (including Legos, which will not grow in our garden).
Our organic sweet potatoes. We were able to get these at Aldi’s for super cheap. We’re using a variety of glassware to hold the sweet potatoes.
Putting the toothpicks into the sweet potatoes to keep them partially submerged. Boy Wonder #2 decided his sweet potato need to be a robot.
Girl Wonder #1 made sure her toothpicks lined up so the whole potato wouldn’t get dunked in the water and get icky. Using her big girl muscles made it easier to stick the toothpicks in.
All sweet potatoes in their respective glasses. Now they sit in the front window to get lots of morning light to grow their roots and slips.
This sweet potato slip-growing also doubles as one of our homeschool science experiments. For this experiment, the Boys Wonder have to draw a picture of the sweet potatoes in the glasses. Each week when we check the sweet potatoes, they will have to make more pictures of what they see growing. Since he’s older, Boy Wonder #1 will also have to write about what he’s seeing change in the sweet potato.

Fun and tasty experiment.
Thanks, Jeavonna, for stopping by! They Kids are having fun watching to see what happens.
Oh my gosh, I used to do this all of the time as a kid–why haven’t I done it with my own yet? Ugh, Garden Mommy Fail! Thanks for the reminder! Must get organic sweet potatoes, stat!
No Garden Mommy fails allowed on Tuesdays! You’ve still got time to get your sweet potatoes going no matter the zone. You know, we never did this as kids. I’m having fun trying it with my kids. I’m so glad you stopped by today. Thank you!
